EP5243 & PU3435 used in Marine exploration

17/08/2016

A leading oil exploration technology organisation has recently been investing in their new, state of the art technology. Several new products have been developed by the company, and Alchemie have been able to recommend several epoxy and polyurethane materials to be suitable for the specific application. The products require precise material properties to complete the design criteria.

The first product is an encapsulated power supply unit and charger. The product required a resilient epoxy which could encapsulate the devices electronics. Alchemie recommended EP5243, as this is specifically designed for electrical encapsulation, and formulated to provide a clear casting. The fast curing epoxy resin is specially designed for use in industrial applications requiring a strong, durable casting where low colour and high UV resistance is required. It has excellent water resistance, chemical resistance, mechanical properties and excellent adhesion to a variety of substrates. The result is pictured below:

The next product is a GPS & Antenna clamp assembly. The product required the mounting clamp to be made from a hard-wearing polyurethane to withstand all weather conditions. PU3435 was chosen as the most suitable material, as this is a tough flexible polyurethane system of 80 – 90 Shore A, designed specifically for offshore applications requiring good tensile strength and chemical resistance. The system has a fast cure and exhibits a rapid development of properties.

The third product is a Buoy Control. The device allows marine buoys to be electronically tracked. This also needed a durable polyurethane to encapsulate all the electronics held in the device, so PU3435 was also recommended for this product.

The final product is a stackable encapsulated battery. This is used to provide additional functionality to the electronic range. PU3435 was once again used for this application, to give the electronics a waterproof encapsulated polyurethane body.
