Alchemie Trophy makes debut at World Cup 2014

11/07/2014

The music industry is celebrating the World cup with its own trophy for 2014. To mark the occasion, artist Ryan Callanan (RyCa) has launched a limited number of ‘Acid Cups’. The trophies are an adaptation of the FIFA World Cup Trophy with the famous electronic dance music smiley face added.

Alchemie was approached by the artist, to see if it was possible to provide a suitable product that would meet the customer requirements. The challenge for Alchemie was supplying a material that would create a strong bond with the chrome finish that was crucial to the end product. The material needed to have a similar density to that of the FIFA world cup trophy, so that the 36cm statue, would be very similar in size and weight. Consultation with the customer resulted in Alchemie recommending PU3670 polyurethane material.

Alchemie selected the PU3670 two component polyurethane system, as it has ultra low viscosity, good bond strength, thin section strength and to which mineral and metallic fillers can be added. This can be used to produce ultra-fine detail in model-making, or as a low viscosity casting resin for pattern-making. The replica world cup trophy was then given a chrome effect to complete the design.

The cup was released last month and sold out immediately, with renowned DJ Norman Cook (Fat Boy Slim) being the first to purchase one. Only 14 of the exclusive cups were manufactured. The DJ originally wanted to use the cup for his album cover, but due to copyright laws, this was not possible. Pictured below is Fat Boy Slim with the cup at the Copacabana pool party in Rio de Janeiro.

Since the sell-out of the popular cup, a ‘half time’ edition has been designed, which is 23ct gold leaf.
